Follow the order of operations

Calculators evaluate parentheses first, followed by exponents, multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction. Use brackets to make the intended order visible instead of relying on a long expression that is difficult to check.

Choose the correct angle unit

Trigonometric functions can use degrees or radians. Geometry exercises are often written in degrees while calculus commonly uses radians. An unexpected sine or cosine result is frequently caused by the wrong angle mode.

Distinguish powers, roots and logarithms

Squaring multiplies a value by itself, while the principal square root reverses that operation for non-negative real values. The common logarithm uses base ten and the natural logarithm uses the constant e.

Estimate before accepting the result

Review brackets, signs and decimal positions. Estimate the likely magnitude of the answer first. If the display falls far outside that range, inspect the expression instead of automatically copying the number.
